Calculus has had a very interesting evolution starting from Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz in the 1660's. The ideas were controversial and criticised, particularly the notion of finding a tangent line where we ask "Lim h approaches 0".
Bishop George Berkely criticised this notion as "the ghosts of departed quantities".
